The Incredible Journey of Zubaida Hasan

Zubaida Hasan was only nine years old, living a simple life in a small Afghan village, when tragedy struck in 2001. While lighting her family’s gas stove, it suddenly exploded, engulfing her in flames.

The burns were catastrophic—her face fused to her chest, and one arm was locked against her body. A local doctor told her father there was no hope and advised him to take her home to die peacefully.

But her father refused to give up. Desperate to save her, he carried her to a U.S. military base in Kabul. Although the hospital rarely admitted civilians, doctors were moved by her condition and made an exception. Soon, Zubaida was flown to the United States, where she came under the care of renowned burn specialist Dr. Peter Grossman.

She underwent multiple surgeries and skin grafts. Despite the pain, Zubaida’s courage amazed everyone around her. Dr. Grossman and his wife even welcomed her into their home, supporting her as she recovered.

Within just 12 weeks, Zubaida had learned English, enrolled in school, and formed new friendships. And within a year, after several operations, her face was reconstructed—restoring her ability to sing, dance, and play guitar.

Once considered a hopeless case, Zubaida’s miraculous transformation is a powerful reminder of resilience, hope, and the will to survive.
